Barcode Add-In for Microsoft® Excel® 2007 *** NEW ***
|
The add-in is accessed through the "Insert" tab of the ribbon, making a barcode just another content element, much like shapes, charts or similar content. Simply select the barcode type, bind the barcode to one or more cells and it will be refreshed automatically if the underlying data changes.
After placing a barcode in the work sheet it can be controlled with the control elements in a separate task pane, allowing to set all properties like code type or size with a few clicks:
The barcode is essentially a shape so it can be treated like other shapes: It can be moved around, rotated, scaled etc. In the first example the content of the code was static data. The real fun comes if the content of the barcode is bound to a cell on the worksheet. Entering the cell reference of "$P$3" in the "Single Cell" field the barcode is now linked to this cell and will update automatically when the cell's content changes. This also works if the content is the result of a calculation, i.e. if it depends on yet another cell.
Obviously, very often you might wish to combine the contents of multiple cells into a single barcode, like, for example, for package lists or invoices. That's possible, too. Select the "Group of Cells" button and enter the cell references one by one in the box below. Specify field separators or prefix / postfix data if so required (binary data like EOT are also permitted). Again the barcode is updated instantly:
That's quite a lot of data for Code 128. As the Barcode Add-In for Excel 2007 supports all major 2D area barcode (like PDF417 and QR Code), we'll simply select Datamatrix, a popular 2D symbology. The add-in takes care of all necessary data conversion, checksum generation etc. in the background:
All barcodes along with their properties, position on the worksheet, rotation etc. are automatically stored with the current workbook and can be reaccessed when the workbook is opened again. If you give such a work book to someone who doesn't have the Barcode Add-in for Excel 2007, they will still have the barcodes in the sheet to view or print them out but won't be able to edit their properties, like content, code type etc. Special features
